Key Terms to Know in Blackjack
Hit
Asking the dealer for an additional card. If your hand total exceeds 21, you Bust and lose.
Stand
Choosing to keep your current hand and not take any more cards. You usually Stand when you are ahead of the dealer.
Double Down
Doubling your original bet and taking exactly one more card, then Standing. Double Down is a strategic move when you have 10 or 11.
Split
If you hold two cards of the same value, you can Split them into two separate hands, each with its own bet. Experts recommend Splitting Aces and 8s.
Insurance
When the dealer's face-up card is an Ace, this is a side bet that lets you wager up to half your original bet to protect yourself in case the dealer has Blackjack.
Blackjack (Natural)
If your first two cards are an Ace and a 10-value card (10, J, Q, K), it is called a Natural Blackjack — the best possible hand.
Bust
When your hand or the dealer's hand exceeds 21, that side Busts and loses immediately. If the dealer Busts, any player who has not Busted wins.
Push (Tie)
If your hand total and the dealer's hand total are equal, it is a Push and your original bet is returned. Not the most exciting result, but you do not lose any money.
